VOLUNTEERS-FAQs

VOLUNTEER-FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQs)
Do I have to have accounting or tax courses or tax experience to be a VITA volunteer? No.  We provide the tax law training and tax software training to all incoming volunteers including those who do not have previous accounting or tax experience.
Am I  required to attend all of the scheduled VITA classroom training sessions each year? Each year, VITA volunteers must obtain new IRS Certifications in Code of Ethics, Intake & Quality, and Advanced tax law (or Basic Certification in some cases).  Volunteers who are familiar with tax return preparation oftentimes do their own review of the certification topics and take the online test at IRS Link & Learn Certifications website.  In those cases when Certifications are obtained each year through independent study, then attendance at VITA classroom training sessions is not required.
Do I need to know how to type to be a VITA Volunteer?Typing is needed to enter data (names, addresses, descriptions, numbers)  into the software; however, some VITA volunteers are “greeters” and do not enter tax data into the tax preparation software and do not need typing skills.
Am I required to be a volunteer in all of the scheduled clinic days/times?  I will be out of town on one of them and cannot attend the clinic on that day.We hope that you can attend all of the scheduled clinic days, but you are not required to be a volunteer on all four of our clinic sessions.  if you cannot attend one of the clinic sessions, please let us know in advance of that clinic session.
Is there anything that I have to buy or pay for to be a VITA volunteer?    There is nothing for you to pay for or buy to be a VITA volunteer.  There will be ample supplies provided to the volunteers including access to computers.  All of the training and training materials are free to volunteers.
